Introduction
A learning path is a flexible framework that enables learners to build a personalized learning experience that helps them achieve their personal and professional goals.
The methods learners can use to build learning paths depend on the Learn365 features available at their organization. Learners can build learning paths manually, according to the skills framework, or with AI.
Learners create their own learning paths and only they can view and edit them. Admins and line managers can't generate learning paths for other learners, and they can't view or edit learning paths that learners generate.
This article explains the methods learners can use to build their personalized learning paths.
Why should learners use learning paths?
Learning paths offer a foundation for enabling meaningful, measurable growth for learners. They support a wide range of learning strategies, from AI-driven personalization to structured skill development and hands-on curation.
Generate learning paths with AI
This approach provides learners with a more structured, contextualized learning experience.
Orbie, our AI coach and assistant, takes a goal that the learner enter and the user’s profile information, such as their department, position, and city, and defines a skeleton of the most optimal learning journey to cover all required topics. Then, Orbie looks for a match in course and training plan properties such as their title, long description, categories, and tags. Relevant training from all available catalogs is added to the learning path.
For information about how learners generate learning paths with AI, see this article.
Generate learning paths based on target skills
This approach builds learning paths around your organization’s skills framework. It supports structured growth and helps identify knowledge gaps.
Using this approach, Learn365 looks at a learner's target skills and current proficiency then calculates the skill gap. It takes this information and generates an outline of the most optimal learning journey. Any matching training opportunities across all catalogs to which the learner has access are added to the learning path.
For information about how learners generate learning paths based on target skills, see this article.
Generate learning paths manually
For learners who prefer more control in building learning paths, and for organizations that don’t yet use AI or the skills framework in Learn365, it's possible to build learning paths manually.
Using this approach, learners have full control and flexibility over their learning paths.
For information about how learners generate learning paths manually, see this article.
Edit and manage learning paths
When learners build a learning path, they can continue to build it (for example, by adding and removing training) to ensure it remains relevant and appropriate throughout their learning journey. They can also enroll in and take training directly from the learning path.
For information about how learners build, edit, and manage learning paths, and take training from within a learning path, see this article.
Additional information
- Learning paths are available only in the new UI, in both SharePoint and the Learn365 app in Teams.
- Learning paths are available in all subscription plans.
- Learners at all organizations that use the new UI in SharePoint and the Learn365 app in Teams can generate learning paths manually.
- A learner's ability to create learning paths with AI and based on target skills depends on the availability and configuration of these features at each organization.
- AI isn't used to generate learning paths based on target skills.
- Learners create their own learning paths and only they can view and edit them. Admins and line managers can't generate learning paths for other learners, and they can't view or edit learning paths that learners generate.
- Learners can generate up to 15 AI-driven learning paths per day. Learning path queries aren't included in the number of AI requests tracked and don't count against your organization's monthly AI request allowance.
- Learners can build as many learning paths manually or with AI as they want. However, they can have only one learning path based on target skills at a time.
What other methods of building structured learning for learners are available?
Learn365 offers the following methods of structuring learning for learners:
- Training plans
- Training recommendations
- Learning paths
For an at-a-glance comparison of these methods, and to help your organization choose when you might wish to use them, see this article.
