Use effective prompts to build meaningful content with AI

Introduction

Some AI-powered features in Learn365 enable catalog admins and learners to enter prompts that help AI to generate relevant and appropriate content.

To effectively use generative AI, it's important you craft clear and specific prompts: the better the prompt, the better the result will be.

A good prompt includes a clear request, context, format, and examples. Be specific about what you want AI to do, provide relevant background information, specify the required output format, and consider including examples to guide AI's response.

In this article, we explain how catalog admins and learners can write effective prompts for generative AI.

For more information about the AI-powered features available in Learn365, see this article.

NOTE

  • We use Azure OpenAI service filtering, which helps to detect and prevent the generation of harmful, offensive, or potentially dangerous content. If such content is detected, the service will refuse to generate it. The administrator will be notified in such instances.
  • Due to the nature of the technology involved, AI-generated content may be incorrect. We are continually developing AI-related features to enhance the quality of generated content.

Define your objective

  • Be clear about what you want AI to help you achieve. Build your prompts in such a way that they give AI the best chance or giving you the best output. For example, do you want AI to include beginner or expert level courses to your learning path? Do you want AI to create a course that focusses on a specific part of the subject matter?
  • Specify the type of output you expect.
  • Consider the tone and style.

Provide context

  • Give background information to help AI understand your request. This might include the topic, scenario or situation, and purpose of the output.
  • Explain the context of your request.
  • Is the output intended for a specific target audience or role? If so, include this in your prompt so AI can tailor its response.

Be specific

  • Use clear and descriptive language. Avoid vague or ambiguous terms.
  • Where possible, provide examples of what you want. This helps AI better understand the required format and style.
  • Specify the required length and detail of the output. For example, how many courses would you like in the learning path? AI will try to add the specified number of courses to the learning path.
  • Tell AI what you don't want to include.

Refine your prompts

If the initial response from AI isn't what you wanted or expected, think about what AI got right in its response and what it could improve on. Change your prompt according to your findings and try again.

Examples of good prompts

In this section, we hope you'll find some good examples of prompts you can use as inspiration when using AI-powered features in Learn365. You'll also see some examples of prompts you should avoid.

When creating a course with AI

If you choose to enter just a topic and ask AI to generate a course based on this topic:

  • Instead of entering a broad topic like "Add a course about software testing", provide more information to help AI generate an appropriate course. You might try something like "Generate a course for experienced software testers in the telecommunications industry that demonstrates how they can use AI to reduce the amount of manual testing they need to carry out throughout the release cycle."
  • Instead of entering "How to write user documentation", you could enter "Prepare an introductory course for somebody new to the technical writer role. The course should include modules on the benefits of good user documentation, what good user documentation looks like, the challenges technical writers often face, how to obtain meaningful feedback and documentation review comments, what AI techniques can technical writers use, and advice on how to succeed in the role."

When creating a quiz or quiz questions with AI

If you choose to enter just a topic and ask AI to generate a quiz based on this topic:

  • Instead of entering "Create a quiz about transformers.", give AI more information about the purpose of the quiz and the intended audience. Try "Create a quiz that will test field engineers in the electricity industry on how to diagnose and fix issues with a faulty power transformer, specifically focusing on issues related to overheating and insulation breakdown."

When generating learning paths or training recommendations with AI

  • Instead of entering "Time management", be more specific about your learning goal by entering "I want to improve my time management skills."
  • Instead of entering "Communicate better", add more context by entering something like "I feel awkward when speaking in front of a large group. I want to find courses that can help improve my verbal communication and presentation skills."
  • Instead of entering "Problem solving", try entering "As a field engineer in the telecommunications industry, I want to improve my ability to solve problems when I'm on site."
  • Instead of entering "AI in software testing", consider using a prompt like try entering "As a new starter working in the Finance team, I want to learn about how AI can help introduce efficiencies in my day-to-day work."
