Synchronizer SharePoint ACS Migration

This article will walk through the process of migrating from the current ACS to the new Enterprise Application model.

Microsoft is permanently retiring Azure Access Control Services (ACS) for SharePoint Online. New tenants have already been blocked (as of November 1, 2024) and all remaining ACS usage will stop working on April 2, 2026, with no extensions. More information from Microsoft can be found here: Azure ACS retirement in Microsoft 365

IMPORTANT

The Synchronizer uses ACS for the CSV synchronization. This means that on April 2, 2026, the CSV synchronization will no longer work for any environments that have not been migrated.

Requirements Prior to Migration

  • Global Microsoft Administrator
  • Access to the Automation Center

Preview of the Migration Process

The migration process will include granting two new Automation Center permissions while removing the old SharePoint ACS usage.

Admin Consent

Admin consent will require additional permissions:

  • The permission labeled “Have full control of all site collections” is a delegated permission. This means the application can only access sites that the signed-in user (in the Automation Center) already has access to.
  • This permission is required temporarily to assign another permission: “Access selected site collections” — used to save the connection between the Synchronizer and the SharePoint site.
  • Once the preferences have been saved, you may revoke the “full control” permission if you wish.

The “Access selected site collections” permission allows the system to access the specific site you choose in the settings. It will be used on an ongoing basis by the Synchronizer service to process CSV files.

Migration Steps

IMPORTANT

We recommend that these steps be completed by a Global Administrator as admin consent may be required.

  1. Navigate to the Automation Center.
  2. Go to the Synchronizer > Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the Use CSV from SharePoint library section.
  4. Select Update SharePoint Permissions

  5. Click the Continue button.

  6. Accept the permissions.
  7. The migration is complete.
