Introduction
NOTE
Currently, learners can generate learning paths only if the LMS admin at your organization configures the availability of the new UI in SharePoint and Teams. If this is configured, learners can set the Beta preview toggle on My Training Dashboard to On and try out the new user experience. If this isn't configured, learners will continue to use the original UI on My Training Dashboard and won't be able to generate learning paths until the new UI becomes the default.
AI-generated learning paths provide learners with a more structured, contextualized learning experience. Using AI, tailored learning journeys are generated based on a learner's profile and a learner-defined goal. Using this approach, learners enter a learning goal. The AI service takes the goal, defines what it determines is the optimal learning path for them, and adds relevant training.
For more information about learning paths and how they can help learners navigate their personalized learning journey, see this article.
In this article, we show how AI-powered assistance (via Orbie, our AI coach and assistant) can help learners efficiently create personalized learning paths to support their learning journey in the My Training section on My Training Dashboard.
For more information about the methods employed by Learn365 to manage data, ensure privacy, and maintain security in the context of AI-powered features, see this article.
NOTE
- We use Azure OpenAI service filtering, which helps to detect and prevent the generation of harmful, offensive, or potentially dangerous content. If such content is detected, the service will refuse to generate it and the learner will see an on-screen message.
- Due to the nature of the technology involved, AI-generated content may be incorrect. We are continually developing AI-related features to enhance the quality of generated content.
Enable AI assistance so learners can generate learning paths with AI
Required role: LMS admin or Microsoft 365 global admin
Before learners can create learning paths with AI assistance, you must enable AI-enhanced features in the Learn365 Admin Center > Global Settings > LMS Configuration > AI features. This option will already be enabled if your organization currently uses AI-enhanced features. Additionally, you'll need to drag the Learning paths toggle to On.
For information about how to enable AI-powered assistance features in Learn365, see this article.
What training can be included in learning paths generated with AI?
The My training section on My Training Dashboard shows training across all catalogs on the tenant to which the learner has access. Similarly, Orbie searches for training across all catalogs to which the learner has access on the tenant. This includes any training imported from LinkedIn Learning, Go1, OpenSesame, and Udemy Business.
Orbie knows what training the learner is enrolled in and what training they have already completed.
The following training is eligible for inclusion in AI-generated learning paths:
- Training with any enrollment status.
- Non-mandatory training.
- Training for which the learner isn't also a course admin.
The following training isn't eligible for inclusion in AI-generated learning paths:
- Deleted training.
- Training from deleted catalogs.
- Training to which the learner doesn't have access.
- Unpublished training.
- Ended training.
- Training for which the learner is also a course admin.
How does Orbie create learning paths with AI?
Orbie takes the learner-defined goal and the learner’s profile information, such as their department, position, and city, and defines a skeleton of the most optimal learning journey to cover all required topics. Then, Orbie looks for a match in course and training plan properties such as their title, long description, categories, and tags.
Where there isn't any available training associated with the defined goal, placeholder (or Proposal) tiles, which indicate a potential content gap, are added to the learning path instead.
NOTE
Placeholder tiles offer training suggestions that learners might choose to investigate and add to their learning path. Placeholder tiles contain fictitious training titles, so they don't refer to training to which learners have access. However, learners can use training suggestions as a source of inspiration when searching for relevant training to add to their learning path. When learners add training in this way, it replaces the corresponding placeholder.
Create learning paths with AI
NOTE
Each learner can generate up to 15 AI-driven learning paths per day. Learning path queries aren't included in the number of AI requests tracked in the AI usage section in the left-hand navigation panel of the Learn365 Admin Center and in Global Settings. Additionally, learning path queries don't count against your organization's monthly AI request allowance.
Learners can have as many AI-driven learning paths as they want.
Required role: learner.
1. Go to My Training Dashboard > My training. The My training page opens.
2. Scroll down to the My learning paths section.
Here, learners see the learning paths they have generated.
3. Select New learning path.
The options learners see depend on the features configured at your organization.
4. From the popup menu, select Generate with Orbie. The Generate learning path dialog opens.
5. Enter a learning goal in the What would you like to learn or achieve? field. Learners can enter between 10 and 500 characters.
For example, learners could enter the following prompts to generate a learning path that contains training that would support their specific learning goals:
- I want to improve my time management skills.
- I want to further develop my communication skills.
- Improve my ability to solve problems.
- I want to learn about how AI can help introduce efficiencies in the day-to-day work of software testers.
Entering specific learning goals increases the chances of finding relevant, matching training.
6. Select Generate or Cancel.
The amount of time it takes to generate a learning path depends on the complexity of the learner's query and the training to which they have access.
If a learner defines insufficient content, or Orbie can't find any courses or training plans that match their learning goals, they will see a message. If this happens, learners should change the learning goal and try again.
As a result:
- AI will generate a learning path consisting of one or more sections.
- Each section might contain e-learning courses, instructor-led training, training plans, and training placeholders.
- Relevant training from all available catalogs is added to the relevant sections. Where there isn't any available training, placeholder (or Proposal) tiles are added to the learning path.
- The generated learning path will have a default title and description, which can be edited.
- Only the learner can view and access their generated learning paths. Admins, line managers, and other users can't access to them.
- Learners can view and edit the learning path, enroll in training, and take training from it.
Learning paths are added to the My learning paths section as cards. On the card, learners see the title, their overall learning path progress (based on their progress with all training in the learning path), and the number of courses and training plans in the learning path.
Learners can see their progress with individual courses and training plans on the dedicated learning path pages, which they access by selecting a learning path in the My learning paths section. Here, their learning path is displayed on a timeline, which represents their learning journey.
Next steps
When learners generate a learning path with AI, we strongly recommend they check the generated learning path to ensure it meets their specific needs and expectations.
Once generated, learners can continue to build their learning path it (for example, by adding and removing training, and replacing placeholders with relevant training) to ensure it remains relevant and appropriate throughout their learning journey. They can also enroll in, and take training directly from, a learning path.
For information about how learners build, edit, and manage learning paths, and take training from within a learning path, see this article.

Languages supported by AI
The AI-powered assistant understands languages that are supported by Microsoft. Generated content can be in the same language as the content the learner provided or a different one.
AI might generate content in an unexpected language if the learner provided content in several languages or if they provided insufficient content.
