Introduction
Required role: Super admin.
Career paths and job levels define how employees can progress within your organization's Career Framework. A career path represents a progression track, such as an individual contributor or management track, while job levels represent the stages of progression within that path.
This article explains how to create, edit, duplicate, and delete career paths, as well as how to manage job levels.

Understanding career paths and job levels
A career path defines a progression track that can be assigned to one or more job roles. Each career path contains a set of job levels that represent increasing levels of responsibility, proficiency, or seniority.
Examples of career paths include:
- Individual Contributor
- Management
- Technical Specialist
Each career path includes:
- A title
- A short tag
- A color
- A set of job levels
- An optional description
The global career path
A Career Framework contains one global career path. The global career path defines the underlying level structure used by all other career paths in the framework.
The global career path:
- Is created automatically when the Career Framework is created.
- Contains five default levels (L0-L4).
- Can't be deleted.
Open career paths
You can manage career paths from either the Career Framework page or a job family page.
1. Select Organisation > navigation menu (the icon) in the top right-hand corner > Career Framework. The Career framework page opens.
2. Select Career paths. The Career paths page opens.
Create a career path
1. On the Career framework page, select Career paths. The Career paths page opens.
2. Select Add path. The Add career path dialog opens.
3. Enter the Career path title.
4. Enter a short identifier in the Tag field. This is used to label levels for this career path, such as IC or MGR. Tags can't end with a number because job level short names are generated automatically using the tag and level number.
5. Select a Tag color from the drop-down list. This color visually distinguishes the career path.
6. Optionally enter a Description, up to 300 characters.
7. Select Add.
The career path is added to the framework.
Edit a career path
1. Open the Career paths page.
2. Find the career path you want to edit.
3. Select the action menu (...) for the required career path > Edit details. The Edit career path dialog opens.
4. Edit the required information.
5. Select Save.
If you change the tag, job level short names are regenerated automatically using the updated tag. For example, changing the tag from IC to ENG updates level short names from IC1, IC2, and IC3 to ENG1, ENG2, and ENG3.
Duplicate a career path
1. Open the Career paths page.
2. Find the career path you want to duplicate.
3. Select the action menu (...) for the required career path > Duplicate. The Duplicate career path dialog opens.
By default, (copy) is added to the end of the Career path title, and a C is added to the end of the Tag, to indicate this is a copy.
4. Edit the required information.
You can edit the Career path title, Tag, and Description, and choose a different Tag color.
5. Select Duplicate.
The duplicate career path contains the same set of job levels as the original path. Level short names are generated using the new path's tag.
Delete a career path
A career path can be deleted only if it has no assigned job roles. You can't delete the global career path.
This action can't be undone.
1. Open the Career paths page.
2. Find the career path you want to delete.
3. Select the action menu (...) for the required career path > Delete. The Delete career path dialog opens.
This option is grayed out if the career path has one or more roles assigned.
4. Select Delete, or Cancel.
The career path is permanently deleted.
Add a job level
Job levels define progression within a career path. A career path can have up to five job levels.
1. Open the Career paths page.
2. Find the career path to which you want to add a job level.
3. Select Add job level in the appropriate position. The Add job level dialog opens.
This option is available only if the career path currently has fewer than five job levels.
4. Enter a Job level title. You can use {role} placeholder to reference the role title, for example Junior {role}. The placeholder is replaced automatically with the role title when displayed.
5. Select Add.
The new job level is added to the career path.
Rename a job level
1. Open the Career paths page.
2. Find the job level you want to rename.
3. Select the action menu (...) for the required job level > Edit. The Edit job level dialog opens.
3. Enter a Job level title.
4. Select Save.
Updated level names are reflected wherever the career path is used.
Reorder job levels
You can change the order of job levels as your career structure evolves.
1. Open the Career paths page.
2. Find the job level you want to move.
3. Select the action menu (...) for the required job level > Move left or Move right.
The framework updates the level order accordingly. All career paths share the same underlying level positions.
Change a career path color
Each career path can be assigned a color to help identify it throughout Career Framework.
1. Open the Career paths page.
2. Find the career path for which you want to change the color.
3. Select the required color from the drop-down list.
Customize job level names for a role
You can customize how a job level is displayed for a specific role without changing the underlying career path. For example, a level might display as Staff Engineer for the Software Engineer role while showing a different name for other roles on the same career path.
To customize a level name:
1. Select Organisation > navigation menu (the icon) in the top right-hand corner > Career Framework. The Career framework page opens.
2. Select a job family card to open it on a page of the same name.
3. Find the role and level you want to customize.
4. Select the action menu (...) on the level cell > Edit. The Edit job level dialog opens.
5. Enter the Job level title. You can use the {role} placeholder in customized level names. The placeholder is replaced automatically with the role title when displayed. For example, Junior {role} might display as Junior Software Engineer and Senior {role} might display as Senior Product Manager.
6. Select Save.
NOTE
Customized level names apply only to the selected role. Other roles on the same career path continue to use the standard level names.
What happens when a career path changes?
If a role is moved to a different career path:
- Any customized level names for that role are removed.
- The role adopts the levels from the new career path.
A role's career path can't be changed while employees are actively assigned to that role. Employees must be reassigned or unassigned first.
